Currently, India has 8 union territories. The state of Jammu & Kashmir lost its statehood and it was converted into a separate union territory. Ladakh was carved out of Jammu & Kashmir and created as a separate union territory. This came into effect on 31st October 2019.
The union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu was established on 26th January 2020 by merging two separate union territories of “Daman & Diu” and “Dadra and Nagar Haveli”. Hence, currently, India has 8 union territories and not 9 union territories.
